Jackdaws

In praise of taccola

When I asked the waiter what the birds were, circling above the old walls over our balcony table view in Spello, he shrugged, rolled his eyes and said he didn’t know. I think they’re now one of my favourite ‘exotic’ birds and a tribute to jackdaws is in order.

Pier Farri - 1972

The poster that the late Albie Thoms presented, shows he had invited italian filmaker Alfredo Leonardi to present his selection of new films but Pier Farri, one of the filmmakers on the programme (but not listed on the poster) came instead.

Against the loss of memory - Umberto Eco

This speech appeared on the Italian delegation to the UN’s website and has been re-quoted from that version a number of times on other sites. It seems to be badly scanned or OCR’d and with no checking of terms, spelling and references. The last minutes were also left un-transcribed which reduces the moments of poetry of a man who would be dead just three years later at 84.  Hopefully it is closer to what Umberto intended.

Ahhh Vespa!

I remember following John Matthews riding a Vespa home to Woodstock outside Melbourne one frosty winter night. Travelling up the Hume Highway, following slowly behind in my Fiat 1100 and when his fingers froze, swapping with him and riding for a while. We stopped at the Kalkallo pub for a brandy to thaw out.
